In a tribute to the heroes who have served their countries in wars throughout the world, this exhibition features art celebrating the strength and spirit of injured troops, wounded civilians, and their families, as well as the commitment of the orthopaedic surgeons who assist them on their journey to recovery.
Wounded in Action includes original works of art showing a different side of war — war-related loss of limbs and other musculoskeletal wounds — and the increasingly pivotal role orthopaedic surgeons play in the lives of war-related injury patients. Artists include military personnel who live with orthopaedic injuries, family members who helped them through their recovery process, and orthopaedic surgeons who treat wounded military and civilians.

Earning more medals in a single Olympics than any previous Olympic athlete and setting 15 world records in his speed skating career, Dr. Heiden is a true American sports icon. At the 1980 Lake Placid Olympic Winter Games, he won the Gold in all five speed skating events, including sprint and distance, while setting four Olympic records and one world record.

Dr. Heiden is currently team physician for US Speedskating, US Cycling, US Handball and BMC professional bicycle racing team.

Everyone has an opinion on this matter but since I'm the one writing the blog you get to hear mine. My absolute go to favorite for steak is Gibson's Steakhouse. Reservations are suggested but waiting or eating in the bar is an option too. If a great steak with a nice glass of wine is your kind of night, this is the place.

I'm not going to write to much about this...try it for yourself. Everything on the menu is superb.

The Synthes Titanium Trochanteric Fixation Nail (TFN) is intended to treat stable and unstable pertrochanteric fractures, intertrochanteric fractures, basal neck fractures, and combinations thereof. The Long TFN is additionally indicated for subtrochanteric fractures, pertrochanteric fractures associated with shaft fractures, pathologic fractures of osteoporotic bone (including prophylactic use) in both trochanteric and diaphyseal regions, long subtrochanteric fractures, proximal or distal nonunions, malunions and revisions.

Synthes now is introducing a second option for proximal fixation in the TFN. Surgeons have the ability to use the new Lag Screw or the existing Helical Blade with using the TFN.

Everyone enjoys fireworks and ferris wheels! Visit Navy Pier, I know every other tourist does but it is enjoyable. There are fireworks on Wednesdays 9:30 pm and Saturdays 10:15 pm every week during the summer.

Get a great view of the Chicago skyline and lake front on the 150 foot-high ferris wheel modeled after the first ferris wheel. The first Ferris wheel was built for Chicago's 1893 World's Columbian Exposition.

Topolobampo accepts reservations but I never mind waiting for a table at Frontera while enjoying a margarita.

Hands-on Workshop: New Concepts in Intramedullary Nail Locking

The Synthes Angular Stable Locking System (ASLS), when used with Synthes cannulated titanium intramedullary nails, is intended to aid in the alignment and stabilization of tibial, humeral, femoral and ankle fractures. It is designed to allow users who want fixed angle locking in a nail.

Fixed angle locking is achieved when the gap between the locking screw and the nail is filled by an elastic material (PLA) which gives a firm initial connection after which resorption will gradually increase micromotion and load sharing to the levels of a typical interlocked nail.

I'm not sure what is going to be bigger in Chicago the weekend of August 6-8, 2010...Chicago Trauma Symposium or Lollapalooza? They both have big names performing. You may run into Lady Gaga, Green Day or Soundgarden at the Palmer House but they won't be speaking on orthopaedic trauma.

What timing! If you enjoy great live music, people watching or general excitement this is a great weekend for you. Lollapalooza happens to be taking place the same weekend as the course almost just across the street at Grant Park. What a great way to relax after the course each evening.

Hands-on Workshop: New Concepts in Peri-Prosthethic Plating

The Chicago Trauma Symposium hosts a rotation of 1 hour hands-on workshops to allow participants to learn more about evolving surgical and implant technologies. The workshops are led by our premier faculty lending their own personal tips and pearls to each procedure.

The Peri-Prosthetic workshop will utilize a 3.5mm Locking Attachment Plate as an alternative to cerclage cables. The plate is attached to existing Synthes locking compression plates (LCP) using a connecting screw, to augment stabilization of fractures.

The arms on each side of the plate offer the possibility of bypassing the prosthesis stem with 3.5mm locking screws (or 3.5 mm cortex screws). The locking capability is important for a fixed-angle construct in periprosthetic fractures and fractures in the presence of intramedullary implants, particularly in osteopenic bone where screw purchase is compromised. These screws do not rely on plate-to-bone compression to resist patient load, but function similarly to multiple, small, angled blade plates.

The Chicago Cubs will be in town Friday, Saturday and Sunday playing day games against Cincinnati. The course will be over in plenty of time for you to catch the Sunday 1:20 game.

You can take the El from the Palmer House directly to Wrigley Field, take the Red Line Monroe Stop to Addison.
